With its natural beauty, modern conveniences, and relative ease of access, Koh Chang is a must-visit for any pet owner looking to get away. The country’s third largest island, located just 250 kilometers from Bangkok and situated in the eastern waters of the Gulf of Thailand has plenty to offer both two- and four-legged visitors. Planning a pet friendly trip to Koh Chang isn’t quite as simple as you may imagine and does require a bit of forethought. So, if you want to spend some time strolling white sand beaches, visiting as many cafe’s as possible, or just lounging by the pool with your best bud, here are our top tips for planning a pet friendly Koh Chang holiday.

Getting There

Koh Chang is a pet friendly island within driving distance from some of the country’s more populated areas including Bangkok, Pattaya, and Hua Hin. This makes it a standout doggy destination and top choice for a majority of Thailand pet owners.

No matter where in Thailand you’re coming from, you will need to catch the ferry from one of the two piers, ‘Koh Chang Ferry’ or ‘Center Point Pier’, in order to reach the island. ‘Koh Chang Ferry’, known in Thai as ‘Ao Thammachat’, seems to offer the most crossings and is generally most people’s first choice. ‘Center Point Pier’, located about 5 km to the east, has a more limited schedule but is a good second option during Holiday weekends when the former can be quite crowded. Both piers are pet friendly but ask that larger dogs remain in the car or are crated if brought onto the ferry deck. Rules for our smaller sidekicks are more relaxed.

Where to Stay

Once on the island, the options for pet friendly accommodations on Koh Chang are limitless. From fan bungalows to luxury resorts, to private villas, you are sure to find great accommodation at the price you like.

If you are looking for a beachfront hotel that checks all the boxes, one of the more popular choices is Flora I Talay. Located along Klong Prao Beach, Flora I Talay is an extremely pet friendly hotel that welcomes four-legged friends of all sizes to their bungalow style rooms just steps away from the sea. Completely free of stray dogs, staying on Klong Prao beach will allow Fido to romp and play without any worry of unwanted visitors. The resort offers free private parking on site and has the added bonus of being directly across from the island’s only veterinary clinic, Koh Chang Animal Clinic.
